Phone Screen Script for Recruiters

What should you ask in a 15-minute phone screen?

Get a ready-to-use 15–20 minute phone screen script for a Gulf hire: an opening and role pitch, eight core questions on notice period, salary, visa status, location and your two must-have skills, time for the candidate's questions, a clear close, and a scoring section to record Pass, Hold or Decline.

How the phone screen script is built

A phone screen checks two things quickly: whether the practical details work (notice period, salary, visa, location) and whether the candidate has real experience of the skills the role cannot do without. The script runs in four timed parts — opening, core questions, candidate questions, close — then a notes and score section. You add the role pitch and two must-have skills, and the script turns them into evidence-based questions. Asking every candidate the same core questions makes the shortlist fair and easy to compare.

Phone screen
A short first call to check fit before you invest interview time.
Must-have skill
A skill the person must already have on day one — not one you can train.
Basic vs package
Basic salary is fixed pay before allowances; the package adds housing, transport and other allowances.
Notice period
How long the candidate must keep working for their current employer after resigning.
Pass / Hold / Decline
Move forward, keep as a back-up, or close the application with a reply.

Before you pick up the phone

  • Ask about visa status with the neutral wording in the script. Don't ask about age, marital status, religion or nationality — unless you are applying a lawful nationalisation preference, and then ask everyone.
  • Ask for salary expectation as basic and total package separately. Gulf candidates often quote one and mean the other.
  • Write notes during the call, against the questions, and decide straight after. Memory fades fast when you screen ten people in a day.
  • Tell every candidate when they will hear back and keep to it — including those you decline.

Before and after the call

Filter applicants first with the knockout questions builder. When a candidate passes, send the interview invitation email and score the interview with the interview scorecard template. To check the joining date a candidate gives you, use the notice period checker.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a phone screen be?

+

15 to 20 minutes is enough for most roles. That gives two minutes to open, ten to twelve for core questions, a few minutes for the candidate's questions and a short close. If you regularly need longer, some of your questions belong in the interview instead.

What questions should I ask in a phone screen in the UAE or Saudi Arabia?

+

Cover the current role and reason for moving, notice period and realistic joining date, salary expectation split into basic and total package, visa status (whether they need sponsorship), location or relocation, and one or two questions that test the must-have skills with a real example. Then leave time for their questions.

Can I ask a candidate about their visa status?

+

Yes, as long as you ask the same neutral question of everyone: whether they hold a residence visa that lets them work for a new employer, or whether they would need your company to sponsor them. Asking about visa status is not the same as asking about nationality, which you should avoid unless a lawful nationalisation preference applies.

When is the best time to call candidates in the Gulf?

+

Within the candidate's working week and time zone: the UAE and Oman are on UTC+4, and Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain are on UTC+3. Avoid Friday midday prayer time, and during Ramadan expect shorter working hours, so offer calls earlier in the day or after iftar if the candidate prefers. Book a time by message rather than calling cold.

Should I share the salary range on the phone screen?

+

If the candidate's expectation is far from your budget, sharing the range early saves time for both of you. Many Gulf employers prefer to hear the expectation first and share the range only if there is a gap. Either way, be clear whether you are talking about basic salary or the total package.

What do Pass, Hold and Decline mean on the scoring sheet?

+

Pass moves the candidate to the next step in the script. Hold keeps a good candidate as a back-up while you see the rest of the shortlist — tell them when you will update them. Decline closes the application; send a short, polite reply rather than leaving the candidate waiting.
