Knockout Questions Builder

Which must-have questions should screen applicants out — fairly?

Pick the must-pass requirements for your Gulf role and get a short set of knockout screening questions, each with its pass answer and the reason it rules a candidate out. Add them to your application form or ATS so you only interview people who can actually take the job.

How the knockout questions work

A knockout question checks one requirement that is not negotiable for the role: the right to work, joining time, salary budget, location, or a licence the job legally needs. Each question has a single pass answer, so the result is a clear yes or no rather than a judgement call. Turn on only the questions that apply; every one you leave off stays out of the document. Questions you can only answer by meeting the person, such as skills and motivation, belong in the phone screen and interview, not here.

Knockout question
A yes/no screening question where the wrong answer ends the application for this role.
Pass answer
The one answer (or set of answers) that lets the candidate move to the next stage.
Visa sponsorship
The employer applying for and holding the work permit and residence visa for the employee.
Total package
Basic salary plus fixed allowances such as housing and transport. Say which one your range means.
Nationalisation preference
Hiring preference for citizens under programmes such as Emiratisation or Saudization.

Before you add them to your form

  • Use a knockout only for a genuine requirement of this job. Every extra knockout shrinks your pool, and some strong candidates will drop out on a technicality.
  • Ask about visa status, not nationality. A candidate's answer is a starting point — confirm the visa position with your HR or PRO team before an offer.
  • Verify licences and certifications (for example DHA, DOH, MOH or SCFHS registration) with the issuing authority. A yes on a form is not proof.
  • Keep the wording identical for every applicant and store the answers, so each rejection can be explained if a candidate or regulator asks.

After the knockouts

Candidates who pass go to a short call — use the phone screen script. Need deeper skill questions? Try the screening questions generator, check joining dates with the notice period checker and compare pay expectations with the salary expectation fit tool.

Frequently asked questions

What are knockout questions in recruitment?

+

Knockout questions are short screening questions on an application form or at the start of a phone screen, where one answer means the candidate cannot do this particular job — for example, they cannot join in time or do not hold a licence the role legally requires. They save time for both sides, because nobody goes through interviews for a job they could never take.

How do I ask about visa status without discriminating?

+

Ask the same neutral question of everyone: whether they hold a residence visa that lets them work for a new employer in the country, or whether they would need your company to sponsor them. Do not ask for nationality, passport colour or religion to work this out. If you sponsor visas for the role, either answer passes and the question is only for onboarding planning.

Can I ask for nationals only in the UAE or Saudi Arabia?

+

Giving preference to UAE nationals under Emiratisation, or to Saudi nationals under Saudization (Nitaqat), is lawful and expected. If a role is reserved for nationals, say so clearly in the job ad and ask every applicant the same question. Outside a nationalisation preference, avoid questions about nationality, age, marital status or religion.

Should I ask about salary expectations in a knockout question?

+

Yes, if your budget is fixed. Stating the range and asking whether the candidate's expectation fits is clearer than asking for a number. In the Gulf, say whether the range is basic salary or the total package with allowances, because candidates compare both and the difference can be large.

How many knockout questions should I use?

+

As few as the job allows — usually three to five. Right to work, joining time and salary cover most roles; add a licence, language or shift question only when the job truly depends on it. Long lists of knockouts put good applicants off before they reach the rest of your form.

How should I word shift and weekend questions in the Gulf?

+

Name the actual days and hours. The weekend is Saturday–Sunday for most UAE employers and Friday–Saturday in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, so 'weekend work' alone is ambiguous. If the rota changes during Ramadan, mention that in the interview rather than in the knockout question.

KNOCKOUT QUESTIONS

KNOCKOUT SCREENING QUESTIONS Role: [Job title] (to fill in) — [Company name] (to fill in) Location: [Work location] (to fill in), the UAE

Ask every applicant these questions, in the same order and with the same wording, before any interview. Each question has one pass answer. An answer outside it ends the application for this role — record the answer exactly as given and move on.

■ Right to work Question: "Do you currently hold a valid residence visa that allows you to work for a new employer in the UAE, or will you need our company to sponsor your visa?" Answer options: I hold a visa that allows me to work for a new employer / I will need visa sponsorship Pass answer: Either answer. We sponsor the visa for this role, so this question is for planning onboarding, not for screening out. Why it's a knockout: Whether someone can legally start depends on their visa and the employer's ability to sponsor. Asking about visa status — not nationality — keeps the question neutral. Confirm the details with your PRO or HR team at offer stage; don't decide on transferability from the answer alone.

■ Notice period and availability Question: "This role needs someone who can join within [Joining time] (to fill in) of accepting an offer. Taking into account any notice period you must serve, can you join within that time?" Answer options: Yes / No Pass answer: Yes Why it's a knockout: If the role cannot wait, a long notice period rules the candidate out however strong they are. Ask for the actual notice period in the phone screen.

■ Salary expectation Question: "The salary for this role is [Salary range] (to fill in). Is your expected salary within this range?" Answer options: Yes / No Pass answer: Yes Why it's a knockout: It stops you interviewing people you cannot afford, and tells candidates early what the role pays. Be clear whether the figure is basic salary or the total package — Gulf candidates compare both.

■ Location Question: "This role is based in [Work location] (to fill in). Do you live within commuting distance, or are you willing to relocate before your start date?" Answer options: I live within commuting distance / I am willing to relocate / No Pass answer: Either "I live within commuting distance" or "I am willing to relocate" Why it's a knockout: On-site roles need the person in the right city on day one. If you offer relocation support, say so in the job ad.

──────────── FAIRNESS NOTE • Ask every applicant the same questions, in the same words, and apply the same pass answers. • Only use a knockout question when the requirement is genuinely needed to do this job. • Do not ask about age, marital status, pregnancy or family plans, religion or nationality. A nationality question is only appropriate where you are applying a lawful nationalisation preference (such as Emiratisation or Saudization), and then ask it the same way of everyone. • Keep a record of each applicant's answers so every decision can be explained.

Add these to your application form or ATS and ask them of every applicant in the same way. Not legal advice — check visa and licensing questions with your HR or PRO team.
