How skills are extracted
The extractor splits the job description into sentences and matches one-, two- and three-word phrases against a skills dictionary built from our Gulf ATS keyword guides, longest match first, so 'financial reporting' wins over 'reporting'. It also picks up acronyms and product names, then sorts certifications, licences, languages and soft skills into their own groups using dedicated lists — including GCC-specific ones like DHA, SCFHS, Saudi Council of Engineers and RERA. Years of experience and education are read from phrases such as '5+ years of … experience' and 'Bachelor's degree in …'. Skills in a requirements section are marked required.
- Hard skill
- A teachable, testable skill or tool — IFRS, AutoCAD, Python.
- Soft skill
- A behaviour such as communication or attention to detail.
- Required
- Mentioned under a requirements heading or with 'must', 'required' or 'essential'.

Limits
- Very niche or brand-new tools may not be in the dictionary — add them to your list by hand.
- It reads English; Arabic-only job descriptions return few results.
- A skill being mentioned doesn't mean it's essential — review the required ones with the hiring manager.

Frequently asked questions
What does the skills extractor pull out?
Seven groups: hard skills and tools (software, standards, methods), certifications (ACCA, PMP, NEBOSH…), licences (driving licence, DHA, SCFHS, Saudi Council of Engineers, RERA), languages with the level if stated, years of experience, education, and soft skills. Skills mentioned in a requirements section or a 'must / required' sentence are marked as required.
How does it recognise skills?
It matches the text against a list of several hundred skills taken from our ATS keyword guides for Gulf roles, plus acronyms and product names (SAP, IFRS, AutoCAD), and separate lists of certifications, GCC licences, languages and soft skills. It's a transparent dictionary match, not AI, so the same text always gives the same list — and it can miss very niche terms.
What can I use the skills list for?
Screening notes and scorecards, interview questions, a cleaner requirements section, Boolean or LinkedIn searches, and checking that the job description asks for what the hiring manager actually needs. If the list is short or vague, that's a sign the job description is too — candidates can't tell whether they fit.
Why are some skills marked required?
Because they appear under a heading such as 'Requirements' or 'What you'll need', or in a sentence with 'must', 'required', 'essential' or 'minimum'. Everything else is listed as mentioned. If a must-have isn't marked required, move it into your requirements list.
Is the job description uploaded?
