How to Use This Graphic Designer Job Description Template
A graphic designer job description has to do two things at once: attract designers whose portfolio matches your brand and standard, and screen out the very large volume of applicants that UAE creative postings attract. The most common mistake employers make is a vague "Graphic Designer wanted - creative and Adobe-skilled" advert that omits the salary band, the must-have portfolio, the actual design focus (brand vs digital vs print vs motion), and the work-authorisation expectation. Generic posts pull hundreds of applications and almost no signal. The template below fixes that. Copy it, replace the bracketed fields with your own details, delete the lines that don't apply, and you have a job description ready to post on MenaJobs and other regional boards.
The template is written for the UAE market specifically. A graphic designer needs no state occupational licence and no professional-body registration to practise - graphic design is unregulated in the UAE, unlike civil, mechanical or electrical engineers who must register with the Society of Engineers UAE. Hiring is driven almost entirely by the portfolio and demonstrable software skill, with degrees and certifications as nice-to-haves. That changes how you screen: require a portfolio (and ideally a paid test brief), and judge the work directly, rather than asking for a non-existent "UAE design licence."

Role purpose

Reporting to the [Creative Director / Marketing Manager], you will turn briefs into polished, consistent designs that perform - on time and to our brand guidelines.
Key responsibilities
- Design assets across digital and print: social media, ads, web/UI visuals, brochures, decks, packaging and signage.
- Develop and apply brand identity and guidelines consistently across all touchpoints.
- Take briefs from concept to final artwork, including revisions and print-ready files.
- Collaborate with marketing, content and (where relevant) web/dev teams.
- Manage multiple projects to deadline and maintain organised, versioned files.
- Prepare bilingual EN/AR layouts where relevant, respecting Arabic typography and RTL.
- Stay current with design trends, tools and regional creative standards.
- For senior/art-director roles: set creative direction, review work and mentor juniors.
Requirements (must-have)
- A strong portfolio demonstrating range, craft and brand consistency relevant to our work (non-negotiable - the single most important requirement).
- [3]+ years' graphic design experience, ideally including UAE or wider GCC / agency experience.
- Expert in the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign); state any others you need (After Effects for motion, Figma for digital/UI).
- Solid grasp of typography, colour, layout, hierarchy and print production.
- Ability to work to brand guidelines and take direction and revisions professionally.
- Good English communication; degree or diploma in design is preferred but a strong portfolio can substitute.
- Eligible to work in the UAE: holds a transferable residence visa or is a candidate we are prepared to sponsor.
Nice-to-have
- Motion/animation (After Effects), basic video editing, or UI/UX design (Figma).
- Bilingual EN/AR design and Arabic typography skills (strong plus in the GCC).
- Packaging, large-format/print or social-first content specialisation.

Salary band and benefits
Salary: AED [X]-[Y] per month, commensurate with experience and portfolio. As a guide, junior graphic designers typically earn around AED 4,000-7,000, mid-level designers AED 7,000-14,000, and senior designers / art directors AED 14,000-25,000+ per month, with small studios and agencies at the lower end and large brands, in-house corporate teams and senior creative-direction roles at the upper end. Public aggregator 'averages' skew low because they blend freelance, junior and part-time data - calibrate to your actual level and portfolio bar. Stating the band is the single most effective filter you can add. Benefits: housing and transport allowances (commonly 25-40% of base), mandatory health insurance, annual or biennial home-country air ticket, employer-sponsored residence visa, and end-of-service gratuity in line with UAE Labour Law.
Work authorisation and visa wording
This role is based in [emirate]. We sponsor a [mainland MOHRE / free-zone] residence visa and work permit; under UAE law the employer pays all visa and permit costs. Candidates with a transferable UAE residence visa can usually start sooner. Note the standard notice period in the UAE is 30-90 days after probation, so factor your availability into your application.
Emiratisation note (use where relevant)
If your company has 50 or more employees, a graphic designer can count towards your MOHRE Emiratisation targets where it qualifies as a skilled role (diploma-or-higher classification, paying at least AED 4,000/month). You can still hire an expatriate designer, and most are, but where you intend to fill this position with a UAE national to support your Nafis quota, say so: e.g. "This role is open to UAE nationals as part of our Emiratisation commitment." Keep any such statement truthful, because MOHRE actively penalises fictitious Emiratisation via its Tasdeeq verification system.
Tips for Writing a Graphic Designer JD That Converts
1. Lead with the three filters. Salary band, the portfolio requirement (with your focus area), and visa expectation belong near the top. This trio cuts unqualified applications dramatically and is the highest-leverage edit you can make.
2. Make the portfolio non-negotiable and specific. "Send your CV" pulls noise. "Send a portfolio showing brand identity and social-campaign work" pulls the right designers and lets you screen on craft, not claims. Since there's no licence, the portfolio is your equivalent of a certification check.
3. Name the design focus. A brand/identity designer is a different hire from a social-content designer, a packaging specialist or a motion designer. "Graphic Designer (social-first, with motion)" tells the right people to apply and the wrong ones to skip it.
4. List the real software. Photoshop-and-Illustrator generalists differ from InDesign print specialists, Figma UI designers or After Effects motion designers. Naming your actual toolset filters for fit and signals you know your own workflow.
5. Don't over-title or under-title. If you need someone to set creative direction and review others' work, that's a senior designer / art director, not a junior. If you need someone to execute templated social assets, that's a junior/mid-weight. Match the title, responsibilities and salary band to each other.
6. Keep claims honest and verifiable. The UAE has no state-issued design licence; unlike a civil engineer who needs Society of Engineers UAE registration, a graphic designer is screened on portfolio and a practical brief. So judge the work and (ideally) set a paid test brief, rather than asking for a non-existent regulatory credential. If you ask for spec work, pay for it - the UAE creative market reacts badly to unpaid 'test' designs.
7. Scale the responsibilities to the seniority. A junior designer executes briefs and applies existing brand guidelines under supervision. A mid-level designer owns projects end-to-end, makes layout and craft decisions, and works to deadline with limited oversight. A senior designer / art director sets direction, develops brand systems, reviews others' work and may mentor juniors. Listing creative-direction duties under a junior salary band is the fastest way to repel good designers or attract people who leave the moment a better-paid match appears. Decide which profile you are hiring, then prune the requirements list so it matches that single profile.
8. Make the location and structure explicit. State whether the role is mainland or free zone, in-office, hybrid or remote, which emirate, and whether it's agency (multiple clients) or in-house (one brand). A line such as "Dubai agency, in-office, fast-paced multi-client" sets expectations and prevents late-stage drop-off.
