UAE Work Visa Guide for Indians 2026: Embassy, Attestation & Pathways
The UAE Visa Landscape for Indian Nationals in 2026
Indians are the single largest expatriate group in the United Arab Emirates, with a community of roughly 3.5 million people — almost 35% of the UAE's resident population and larger than the Emirati citizen base itself. If you are an Indian passport holder planning a move to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, or any other emirate, the visa pathway is well-trodden, predictable, and faster than almost any other GCC destination for Indian nationals. However, it is not automatic: the UAE processes Indian work visa applications through the same federal systems it uses for every other nationality, but layers on India-specific requirements around document attestation, emigration clearance, and consular verification that you must understand before you book a flight.
This guide walks you through every step that is specifically relevant to Indian applicants — from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) attestation chain in New Delhi, to the role of the Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General of India in Dubai, to the documentation you will need to renew your passport or register a marriage while living in the Emirates. We have written it to complement — not replace — our general UAE work visa guide, which covers the visa categories themselves.
Which Visa Category Is Right for You?
Employment Visa (Standard Route)
The vast majority of Indians in the UAE are on employer-sponsored employment visas. The process is straightforward once you have a job offer: your employer applies for a work permit through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), and an entry permit through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) or the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). You travel to the UAE on the electronic entry permit, undergo a medical fitness test, apply for your Emirates ID, and receive your 2–3 year residence visa.
For Indian nationals, total processing from offer acceptance to residence stamp is typically 2–4 weeks if your attestation is already complete before you travel. If attestation has not been started, budget 4–8 weeks end-to-end, since MEA attestation in India alone can take 7–15 working days depending on the state-level authentication queue.
Golden Visa
The UAE Golden Visa is particularly attractive to established Indian professionals and entrepreneurs. Eligibility routes that Indians use most often include: a monthly salary of AED 30,000+ in a designated skilled occupation (many Indian mid-to-senior engineers, doctors, and finance professionals qualify), property investment of AED 2 million or more (popular with high-net-worth Indian investors in Dubai real estate), and business investment with a valid commercial licence. Specialized talents such as researchers, senior executives, and outstanding students from Indian universities ranked in the global top 500 also qualify.
Applications are submitted through the ICP smart services portal or via a typing centre. Indian applicants should budget 1–3 months for processing, longer than the standard employment visa because verification involves additional background checks with both Indian and UAE authorities.
Green Visa
The 5-year self-sponsored Green Visa suits Indian freelancers, self-employed consultants, and skilled employees earning AED 15,000+ per month who want independence from an employer sponsor. Indian freelancers with an annual income of AED 360,000 or more and a valid freelance permit (from TECOM, twofour54, Shams, or IFZA) are eligible.
Investor Visa and Dependent Visa
Indian investors setting up a mainland or free-zone business in the UAE can obtain 2–10 year investor visas linked to their trade licence. Indian residents in the UAE commonly sponsor spouses, children (under 18, or up to 25 if full-time students), and in many cases their parents, provided they meet the minimum salary threshold of AED 4,000/month (or AED 3,000 plus employer-provided accommodation).
The Document Attestation Chain for Indian Applicants
This is the single most important section of this guide. Attestation failure is the #1 reason Indian visa applications get stuck — not MOHRE rejection. The UAE will not recognise any Indian educational certificate, marriage certificate, or birth certificate until it has been through the full four-step chain.
- Notary / State authentication in India: Educational certificates must be authenticated by the State Human Resources Department (HRD) of the state that issued the degree, or by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). This alone takes 2–7 working days depending on the state — Maharashtra and Karnataka are faster than Uttar Pradesh or West Bengal.
- Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), New Delhi: Once state-authenticated, the certificate is apostilled or attested by MEA. You can submit through outsourced service providers (VFS Global, BLS International, Alankit, IVS Global) in most major Indian cities. Standard MEA processing is 1–3 working days after receipt.
- UAE Embassy in New Delhi (or the UAE Consulate in Mumbai): The MEA-attested document must then be attested by the UAE diplomatic mission in India. Current fees (2026) are INR 2,000–4,500 per document, depending on the type. Processing is 3–5 working days.
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), UAE: The final step happens after you arrive — your employer's PRO (Public Relations Officer) submits the already-chain-attested document to MOFA UAE for the final stamp, typically at a Customer Happiness Centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
Documents that require this full chain for Indian applicants include: the degree certificate (for skilled employment visas), a marriage certificate (for spouse-sponsored dependent visas), and birth certificates (for child dependent visas). Skip any link in the chain and the visa application will be returned — you will not be told in advance which document caused the issue.
The Embassy of India in the UAE: What They Do For You
Two Indian missions serve the UAE: the Embassy of India, Abu Dhabi (jurisdiction: Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Western Region) and the Consulate General of India, Dubai (jurisdiction: Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain). Both handle passport renewals, Police Clearance Certificates (PCC) for residents moving to another country, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) applications, attestation of India-issued documents for use within the UAE, marriage registration under the Special Marriage Act, death and birth registrations, and emergency consular assistance.
For routine services, Indian residents use the BLS International service centres (located in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah) rather than visiting the mission directly. BLS handles document pickup, fee collection, and passport delivery on behalf of the missions — this saves you a multi-hour queue at the embassy and is the route the missions actively encourage.
Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) From India
UAE employers increasingly require a PCC from India as part of the onboarding pack, especially for banking, healthcare, government-linked, and security-sensitive roles. You have two options: (1) apply through the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) in your Indian home district before you travel — takes 7–30 days and the PCC is valid for 6 months; or (2) apply from within the UAE through the Embassy/Consulate, which forwards your request back to the issuing Regional Passport Office in India — budget 4–8 weeks. Option 1 is strongly recommended if you have any remaining time in India before your move.
Salary Expectations and the India–UAE Remittance Corridor
Tax-free income is the single largest financial reason Indians move to the UAE. A mid-level IT professional earning ₹18–25 lakh per annum in Bengaluru or Hyderabad typically commands an AED 15,000–25,000 monthly package (AED 180,000–300,000 per annum) in Dubai, a 50–80% net-take-home uplift after accounting for UAE's zero personal income tax versus India's 30% marginal rate. Senior engineering and finance roles routinely cross AED 40,000/month. Healthcare professionals, particularly specialist doctors and nurses from kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, see similar multipliers.
The UAE → India remittance corridor is the largest single inward flow in the global remittance market, with Indians in the UAE sending approximately $25 billion home annually — roughly a quarter of all India inward remittances. NRE (Non-Resident External) and NRO accounts with Indian banks like SBI, HDFC, ICICI, and Federal Bank can be opened directly from the UAE with just your passport, Emirates ID, and salary certificate, allowing you to remit earnings tax-free into India.
Common Issues Indians Face — and How to Avoid Them
After helping thousands of Indian applicants through the UAE system, a handful of issues account for the vast majority of rejections and delays. Name mismatches between an Indian passport (which may use initials or expanded names inconsistently) and a degree certificate are the most common — fix this with an affidavit in India before you travel. Missing state-level HRD authentication before MEA attestation is the second most common failure: MEA will reject the document and you will need to restart the chain. The third issue is attempting to enter the UAE on a visit visa and then convert to a work visa — while technically possible, UAE authorities have tightened rules around this in 2024–2026, and your employer may still require a fresh medical and Emirates ID regardless.
Key Takeaways for Indian Nationals
- Start your MEA attestation chain in India immediately after accepting an offer — this single step determines whether you relocate in 3 weeks or 8 weeks
- Keep digital copies of every attested document in at least two cloud services; you will reuse them for Emirates ID renewal, dependent sponsorship, and future job changes
- Budget INR 25,000–45,000 for a complete attestation package (degree, marriage, birth certificates) including government fees and service-centre charges
- Register yourself with the Indian mission after arrival — it is free, takes 10 minutes online, and significantly speeds up any future consular service
- The UAE–India dual taxation treaty and NRE account structure legally protect your UAE earnings from Indian taxation as long as you qualify as a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) — stay under 182 days in India per financial year
- Golden Visa eligibility is far broader than most Indians assume; if you earn AED 30,000+ in a skilled role, check the designated-occupation list before paying for a standard employment visa renewal

Step-by-Step Attestation Roadmap (Starting in India)
Week 1: State-Level Authentication
Visit your state's HRD department or approach an SDM office in Delhi (which can authenticate for any state). Service providers like BLS, VFS, and Alankit offer pickup services in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata. Fee: INR 50–200 per document plus service charges.
Week 2: MEA Apostille or Attestation
MEA has stopped accepting walk-in applications; everything now goes through outsourced agencies. Fee: INR 50 per document (government fee) plus INR 400–900 in service charges. Standard turnaround is 1–3 working days. MEA issues either an Apostille (for Hague Convention countries) or a regular attestation — the UAE requires regular attestation, NOT apostille, so verify the correct stamp.
Week 3: UAE Embassy / Consulate Attestation in India
Submit the MEA-attested document to the UAE Embassy in New Delhi or the Consulate in Mumbai. Fees in 2026 are approximately: educational documents INR 2,025, marriage certificate INR 2,025, birth certificate INR 2,025. Commercial documents are higher at INR 5,100+. Processing is 3–5 working days.
On Arrival: MOFA UAE Final Attestation
Your employer's PRO handles this step in the UAE. Fee: AED 150 per document via smart services, or AED 250 at a Customer Happiness Centre.
Passport Renewal From Within the UAE
Indian passport holders in the UAE renew through BLS International centres, not the embassy directly. The process (2026 fees in AED): fill online form on passport.gov.in, book BLS appointment, submit passport with Emirates ID copy and existing UAE residence visa page, pay renewal fee (AED 290–350 depending on booklet size and urgency) plus BLS service charge (AED 30–45). Standard 10-year adult renewal takes 15–25 days; tatkal (urgent) service is available at roughly 2x fee and produces a passport in 5–10 days. Children under 18 and minors added to parent passports earlier (pre-2015) must now apply separately.
Avoiding the Top 7 Indian-Applicant Pitfalls
- Expired PCC: PCCs are valid 6 months from issue date. Getting one 4 months before travel, then delays push you past 6 months, means restart
- Degree name mismatch: If your passport says "Amitabh Kumar Singh" but your degree says "A. K. Singh", UAE embassy may reject the attestation. Fix with a Gazetted name affidavit in India before MEA submission
- Attested in wrong state: Some applicants try to authenticate a Maharashtra University degree in Delhi SDM. Some UAE embassy counters accept this, some reject. Use the state of issue when possible
- Engineering Council membership lapsed: Indian Institution of Engineers and Medical Council of India memberships are commonly requested for senior engineering and medical roles — renew before you travel
- Skipping MOFA UAE step: Thinking the four-step chain ends at the UAE Embassy in India is a classic error — MOFA UAE must stamp it in the UAE as the final step
- Visit-to-work conversion gap: If you enter on a visit visa planning to convert, ensure your employer has confirmed they sponsor visa-status changes in writing — some do not, forcing an exit and re-entry
- Emirates ID biometrics mismatch: If your fingerprint registration at ICP does not match a previous UAE record (from an old visit visa), your case is referred for manual review — flag any prior UAE visa in the application, do not hide it
