What Makes a Strong Software Engineer Job Description in the UAE

Engineering job ads attract enormous, global application volume - much of it from overseas candidates who need full sponsorship and relocation, and much of it off-stack. The most useful thing a UAE software-engineer JD can do is be ruthlessly specific about the stack, the seniority and the visa/relocation expectation, so the right people self-select in and the wrong ones self-select out. A vague "looking for a talented developer to join our dynamic team" ad maximises noise; a JD that names the languages, the cloud, the seniority band and whether sponsorship is available maximises signal. Unlike civil or mechanical engineering, software has no licensing requirement in the UAE, so do not add a Society of Engineers or registration clause - it is wrong and it confuses candidates.

Be honest about level. "Software Engineer" spans a wide band, from entry to principal, with pay running from roughly AED 10,000 to well over AED 60,000 per month, and scarce AI/cloud/security skills carry a significant premium. Pin the JD to a level and a real responsibility scope. State whether the role is free-zone or mainland sponsored, and whether you offer relocation and Golden Visa support for senior hires - these are genuine decision factors for international engineers. Finally, describe how you assess: a fair, time-boxed coding exercise on the actual stack is a far better signal than a list of buzzwords, and saying so up front attracts builders over keyword-stuffers. Use the editable template below and replace every bracketed placeholder.

Software Engineer Job Description Template (Copy & Edit)

Job title: Software Engineer ([Backend / Frontend / Full-Stack / Cloud / ML]) - [Level: Junior / Mid / Senior]

Location: [City], United Arab Emirates ([mainland / free zone, e.g. DIFC / DMCC / ADGM]; [on-site / hybrid / remote-friendly])

Reports to: [Engineering Manager / Tech Lead / CTO]

Employment type: Full-time, permanent

Role Purpose

The Software Engineer designs, builds, tests and ships production software on our [domain, e.g. fintech / e-commerce / SaaS] platform. You will own services end to end, contribute to architecture, and help raise engineering quality across the [N]-person team. This is a [hands-on coding] role working primarily in [core stack].

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test and ship features in [languages / frameworks, e.g. TypeScript, Node.js, React].
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code and participate constructively in code review.
  • Operate services in [cloud, e.g. AWS / Azure / GCP] with CI/CD, monitoring and observability.
  • Contribute to architecture and technical decision-making with the team.
  • Diagnose and resolve production issues; improve reliability, performance and security.
  • Collaborate with product, design and DevOps to deliver against the roadmap.
  • [For senior roles: mentor engineers and set technical standards.]

Requirements

  • [3]+ years building production software (adjust for level).
  • Strong proficiency in [language] and [framework]; solid computer-science fundamentals.
  • Hands-on experience with [cloud provider] and modern delivery practices (CI/CD, testing, version control).
  • A demonstrable portfolio - GitHub, shipped products, or system-design evidence of real work.
  • Bachelor's in Computer Science / Software Engineering (preferred; can be attested for the visa file but no licence is required).
  • Relevant cloud or platform certifications (AWS / Azure / GCP / CKA) are a plus, not a requirement.
  • No Society of Engineers (SOE) membership or engineer registration is required for software roles.

How We Assess

Our process is [N] steps: an intro call, a fair time-boxed [take-home / live] coding exercise on our actual stack, a technical/system-design discussion, and a final conversation. We value demonstrable building over buzzwords.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: AED [X]-[Y] per month (the UAE has no personal income tax, so this is net to you).
  • Housing and transport allowance [or all-inclusive package].
  • Employer-sponsored UAE residence visa and work permit ([free zone / mainland]) - all government fees paid by the employer per UAE Labour Law.
  • Mandatory health insurance, annual air ticket, and end-of-service gratuity per Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021.
  • [Relocation support for overseas hires; Golden Visa support for senior engineers.]

Visa, Work Authorisation & Nationalisation

This is a [free-zone / mainland] sponsored position. The employer covers 100% of visa and work-permit costs; they are never deducted from your pay. We welcome candidates already on a transferable UAE visa and will sponsor and relocate the right overseas candidate. As an equal-opportunity employer operating under UAE Emiratisation policy, we encourage applications from UAE nationals; this role counts toward our skilled-workforce Emiratisation commitments.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in a Software Engineer JD

A few recurring errors waste applications and screening time on UAE engineering ads. The first is the "unicorn" requirements list - demanding deep expertise across five languages, three clouds, mobile, DevOps and machine learning for a single mid-level salary. Real engineers read that as either a disorganised team or a role that pays below market for its scope, and the strongest candidates skip it. Pick the few skills that genuinely matter and mark the rest as nice-to-have. The second is the erroneous licence or "chartered engineer" clause copied from a civil or mechanical template - software has no Society of Engineers requirement, and including one signals that the hiring team does not understand the role. The third is hiding the seniority: an ad that says "junior to senior software engineer" with one salary band confuses everyone and attracts mismatched applicants; pick a level and scope it. The fourth is omitting the visa and relocation position when much of the pool is overseas - candidates need to know whether sponsorship and relocation are on the table before they invest in applying. Finally, avoid a punishing implied process: if your ad reads like it will take five rounds and a week of take-home work, busy senior engineers in a talent-short market will simply apply elsewhere. Signal a fair, time-boxed assessment instead.

Tips for Customising This Template

  • Name the stack precisely. Replace generic placeholders with your real languages, frameworks and cloud - it is the single biggest signal/noise improver.
  • Pin the level. Do not write one ad for "junior to senior." Pick a band, scope the responsibilities to match, and quote the matching salary range.
  • Do not add a licence clause. Software engineers need no SOE card or government registration; an erroneous licensing line confuses candidates and is simply wrong.
  • State visa and relocation clearly. Free-zone vs mainland, sponsorship, relocation and Golden Visa support are real decision factors for international engineers.
  • Describe the assessment. Saying you use one fair coding exercise (not five rounds) attracts builders and shortens your funnel.
  • Flag the skill premium. If you need scarce AI/cloud/security depth, say so and budget the higher band - generalist pay will not attract those candidates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to mention any engineering licence in a software engineer JD?
No - and you should not. Unlike civil, mechanical and electrical engineers, software engineers in the UAE need no Society of Engineers (SOE) membership and no government registration; there is no stamped-work concept in software. Adding a licensing clause is factually wrong and confuses candidates. You can attest a foreign degree for the visa file, but the JD should screen on stack, demonstrable coding ability and certifications - not on any professional licence.
How specific should the tech stack be in the job description?
Very specific. Engineering ads attract huge global, often off-stack volume, so naming your actual languages, frameworks and cloud provider is the strongest signal/noise filter you have. Replace generic placeholders with the real stack, pin the seniority level (the role spans roughly AED 10,000 to AED 60,000+ per month across levels), and describe your assessment - a fair, time-boxed coding exercise on the real stack attracts builders over keyword-stuffers.
Should I mention visa sponsorship and relocation for engineers?
Yes. Much of your applicant pool will be overseas candidates needing sponsorship and relocation, so state clearly whether the role is free-zone or mainland sponsored, that the employer pays 100% of visa costs (they cannot be deducted from pay under UAE Labour Law), and whether relocation and Golden Visa support are available. For senior engineers, Golden Visa support is a meaningful closing incentive worth naming.
How do I word salary for a software engineer in the UAE?
Quote a band that matches the pinned seniority level rather than a single figure, and note that the UAE has no personal income tax so the salary is effectively net. Budget a premium for scarce AI, cloud or cybersecurity skills - generalist pay will not attract those candidates - and include the standard package elements (housing/transport allowance, health insurance, annual air ticket and end-of-service gratuity per Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021).
