An HVAC engineer job description in the GCC has to attract a genuinely qualified mechanical/MEP engineer while filtering out the much larger pool of generic "HVAC" CVs - from technicians to draughtsmen - that every Gulf construction posting attracts. Role purpose
We are a [MEP contractor / consultancy / developer / FM company] based in [city / emirate], looking for an HVAC Engineer to [design / install / commission / maintain] heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems on [project type, e.g. high-rise residential, hospitality, healthcare, district cooling]. Reporting to the [MEP Lead / Project Manager], you will deliver compliant, energy-efficient HVAC systems to ASHRAE, DEWA and Dubai Civil Defence standards.
Key responsibilities
- Perform cooling-load calculations (HAP / Carrier / manual) and size chillers, AHUs, FCUs, ducting and pumps.
- Produce or review HVAC design and shop drawings, schematics and equipment schedules.
- Ensure designs comply with ASHRAE standards, DEWA requirements and Dubai Civil Defence fire/smoke-management codes.
- Prepare and submit packages for Dubai Municipality / authority approvals and coordinate with other MEP trades (electrical, plumbing, fire).
- Supervise site installation, testing, adjusting and balancing (TAB) and commissioning (site track).
- Plan and oversee preventive and corrective maintenance of HVAC plant (FM/maintenance track).
- Review BOQs, material submittals and contractor/vendor technical compliance.
- Drive energy efficiency, Al Sa'fat / Estidama green-building and district-cooling integration where relevant.
- Maintain HSE compliance on site at all times.
Requirements (must-have)
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (HVAC specialisation preferred), attested by UAE MOFA and the home country.
- [4]+ years' HVAC/MEP experience, ideally including UAE or wider GCC project experience.
- Registration with the Society of Engineers UAE (SOE) - the baseline credential to practise as an engineer in the UAE (state your minimum clearly). For roles that sign off/submit works, Dubai Municipality engineer accreditation (or Abu Dhabi DMT) is required.

Salary band and benefits
Salary: AED [X]-[Y] per month, commensurate with experience and focus. As a guide, junior/graduate HVAC engineers typically earn around AED 6,000-10,000, mid-level engineers (3-7 yrs) AED 10,000-18,000, and senior/lead design engineers AED 18,000-30,000+ per month; design and consultancy roles trend higher than pure site roles, and oil-and-gas/industrial HVAC pays a premium over standard building MEP. Work authorisation and visa wording
This role is based in [emirate]. We sponsor a residence visa and work permit; under UAE law the employer pays all visa and permit costs. The engineer-title residency and SOE registration require an attested mechanical-engineering degree, so factor attestation time into your start date. Candidates with a transferable UAE residence visa can usually start sooner. The standard notice period in the UAE is 30-90 days, so factor your availability into your application.
Emiratisation note (use where relevant)
Construction and engineering is among the sectors covered by MOHRE Emiratisation, so if your company has 50+ employees an engineer counts towards your phased national-hire targets (and 20-49 firms in designated sectors have their own one/two-Emirati obligations). You can still hire an expatriate HVAC engineer, and most are, but where you intend to fill this role with a UAE national to support your Nafis quota, say so: e.g. "This role is open to UAE nationals as part of our Emiratisation commitment." Keep any such statement truthful, because MOHRE penalises fictitious Emiratisation.
Tips for Writing an HVAC Engineer JD That Converts
1. Name the focus. A design engineer, a site/installation engineer and a maintenance engineer are different hires with different pay. Putting design / site / maintenance in the title and first line is the highest-leverage edit you can make.
2. State the engineering registration honestly. An HVAC engineer is a mechanical engineer, so practising in the UAE requires Society of Engineers UAE (SOE) membership, and signing off/submitting works requires Dubai Municipality (or Abu Dhabi DMT) engineer accreditation. Don't invent a separate "HVAC licence" - screen on SOE plus the accredited, MOFA-attested degree, and on municipality accreditation for sign-off roles.
3. Name your codes and software. "HVAC experience" is generic. "Sizes systems to ASHRAE, prepares DEWA and Dubai Civil Defence submittals, and works in HAP and Revit MEP" tells a real engineer exactly what the job involves and screens for local-code literacy that a candidate from outside the UAE may lack.
4. Be specific about the project type. District cooling, hospitality, healthcare clean-rooms and data-centre cooling each demand different experience. Naming yours filters for genuine fit.
5. State a salary band. A visible AED range deters mismatched applicants and signals seriousness, and is the single most effective filter you can add. It still leaves room to negotiate on design vs site focus and seniority.
6. Scale the responsibilities to the seniority. A junior engineer supports load calcs, drawings and site supervision; a mid-level engineer owns designs or a site package; a senior/lead engineer signs off designs, manages authority approvals and mentors juniors. Listing senior duties under a junior band repels good candidates and attracts the wrong shortlist - decide which profile you're hiring and prune the requirements so the post describes one job.
7. Make location and site/office basis explicit. State the emirate and whether the role is office-based design, site-based, or split. A line such as "Dubai, site-based on [project]" removes ambiguity and prevents drop-off when logistics surface.
8. Separate the engineer from the technician. Gulf HVAC postings draw a wide spread, from AC technicians to chartered design engineers, and a vague advert pulls all of them. If you need someone who can perform load calculations and stamp a design, say so explicitly and require the degree and SOE registration; if you need a hands-on technician, that is a different (and differently paid) hire. Spelling out the engineering deliverables - "performs cooling-load calcs, produces design drawings, prepares authority submittals" - filters out the technician-level CVs that otherwise clog the shortlist.
9. Specify the green-building and efficiency context. Dubai's Al Sa'fat and Abu Dhabi's Estidama frameworks increasingly shape HVAC design, and district cooling is the default for large developments. If the role touches energy modelling, chilled-water plant optimisation or green-building compliance, name it - this both attracts engineers with the right experience and signals that you run modern, efficiency-driven projects rather than basic split-unit work.
Common Mistakes That Sink HVAC Engineer Postings
Three patterns waste the most employer time. First, blurring design, site and maintenance into one advert: a design engineer who lives in HAP and Revit is a different person from a site engineer who runs TAB and commissioning, and a vague post attracts neither cleanly. Decide the focus and write to it. Second, ignoring the local-code reality - an engineer who has only designed abroad may be strong technically but unable to navigate DEWA, Dubai Civil Defence and Dubai Municipality submittals, which is often the whole point of the hire; naming the codes filters for genuine UAE delivery capability. Third, omitting the salary band in a market where HVAC engineer pay ranges from roughly AED 6,000 to AED 30,000+ a month depending on design-versus-site focus and seniority: the band is your most effective filter, and "competitive" tells candidates nothing. Fixing these three before you post does more for shortlist quality than any sourcing effort afterwards.
