How to Use This Dentist Job Description Template

A dentist is a licensed clinical role, and that single fact should shape your entire job description. Unlike most office hires, you cannot legally employ a dentist in the UAE until they hold an active health-authority licence for the emirate your clinic operates in. A job description that buries this requirement, or omits it entirely, pulls in applicants who are months away from being able to treat a patient - or who can never be activated at your location. The template below is built around the licensing reality first, then the clinical and commercial requirements. Copy it, replace the bracketed fields with your own details, delete the lines that don't apply, and you have a job description ready to post on MenaJobs and other regional boards.

The template is written for the UAE market specifically, where dental hiring runs through three separate regulators depending on emirate: the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) for Dubai, the Department of Health Abu Dhabi (DOH, formerly HAAD) for Abu Dhabi, and the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) for Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. All three require the same backbone: a recognised dental degree, post-qualification experience, DataFlow Group primary source verification, and a pass in the relevant Prometric licensing exam. Build those expectations into the post and you screen out the unqualified at the first read.

Job title

Dentist (variations: General Dentist, Specialist Dentist - Orthodontics / Endodontics / Periodontics / Oral Surgery / Prosthodontics / Pedodontics, Associate Dentist). Add the location, e.g. General Dentist - Dubai, UAE, and the regulator if it helps clarity, e.g. (DHA-licensed).

Role purpose

We are a [clinic / hospital / dental group] based in [city / area], looking for a patient-focused [General / Specialist] Dentist to deliver high-quality dental care, build long-term patient relationships and grow chair utilisation. Reporting to the [Medical Director / Clinic Manager], you will diagnose, plan and deliver treatment to the standards set by [DHA / DOH / MOHAP] and our clinical-governance framework.

Key responsibilities

  • Examine, diagnose and treatment-plan across general dentistry: restorations, extractions, root-canal treatment, crowns and bridges, and routine hygiene.
  • Deliver [your specialty mix, e.g. cosmetic, implants, orthodontics, paediatric] in line with your scope of practice on the licence.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and radiographs in the practice-management system.
  • Obtain informed consent and explain treatment options and costs clearly to patients.
  • Comply with [DHA / DOH / MOHAP] infection-control, radiation-protection and clinical-governance standards.
  • Support treatment-plan acceptance and chair utilisation in coordination with reception and treatment coordinators.
  • Keep the required Continuing Medical Education (CME) hours current for licence renewal (DHA requires 40 CME hours per year for dentists).
  • Participate in clinical audits, recalls and patient-recall campaigns.

Requirements (must-have)

  • Recognised BDS / DDS / DMD dental degree from an approved institution (specialists: an accredited specialty qualification on top).
  • Active [DHA / DOH / MOHAP] dentist licence for the emirate this role is based in - or eligibility-in-progress with a clear path: DataFlow report initiated and Prometric exam booked or passed. State which you require.
  • Completed DataFlow Group primary source verification (PSV) of degree, licence and experience.
  • Pass in the relevant Prometric licensing exam (the general-dentist DHA exam is 150 MCQs in 170 minutes as of 2026; specialists may be exempt from the exam depending on category).
  • Minimum [2]+ years' post-qualification clinical experience (DHA requires 2 years for general dentists; specialists typically need 2 further years of specialty practice).
  • Active home-country dental registration and a clean clinical record.

Nice-to-have

  • Existing licence in the exact emirate (a DHA licence does not automatically transfer to Abu Dhabi or vice versa - each regulator is separate).
  • Sub-specialty skills you actually need chairside: implants, clear aligners, paediatric sedation, endodontic microscopy.
  • Arabic alongside English (valuable for patient communication and local-family clientele).
  • An existing patient following or strong treatment-acceptance track record.

Salary band and benefits

Salary: AED [X]-[Y] per month (or a base-plus-commission structure - many private clinics pay a percentage of collections). As a guide, a general dentist in the UAE typically earns around AED 12,000-25,000 per month, while experienced specialists and high-producing cosmetic/implant dentists can reach AED 30,000-50,000+ per month, especially on commission models in busy private clinics. Stating the structure (fixed, commission, or base-plus-percentage) up front is the single most effective filter for this role, because dentists weigh earning models heavily. Benefits commonly include mandatory health insurance, employer-sponsored residence visa, malpractice/indemnity cover, annual or biennial home-country air ticket, CME allowance, and end-of-service gratuity in line with UAE Labour Law.

Work authorisation and visa wording

This role is based in [emirate]. We sponsor a [mainland MOHRE / free-zone / DHCC] residence visa and work permit; under UAE law the employer pays all visa and permit costs. The hiring facility activates the health-authority licence, so candidates with an active [DHA / DOH / MOHAP] licence for this emirate can start sooner; candidates licensed in a different emirate will need to obtain the local licence before practising. The standard UAE notice period is 30-90 days, so factor your availability into your application.

Nationalisation note (use where relevant)

UAE dental practice is overwhelmingly expatriate-staffed, and there is no dentist-specific Emiratisation quota. If your facility employs 50 or more staff, general Emiratisation obligations may apply at the organisation level, but the dentist role itself is filled on clinical merit and licence status. Keep any nationalisation statement truthful, because MOHRE actively penalises fictitious Emiratisation.

Tips for Writing a Dentist JD That Converts

1. Lead with licence status. The first filter for any UAE dentist hire is the health-authority licence. State clearly whether you require an already-active [DHA / DOH / MOHAP] licence for your emirate, or whether you will consider eligibility-in-progress candidates (DataFlow done, Prometric passed or booked). This one line removes the largest source of wasted screening.

2. Name the regulator and the emirate together. A dentist licensed in Dubai (DHA) is not automatically licensed to practise in Abu Dhabi (DOH) or Sharjah (MOHAP). Saying "DHA-licensed, Dubai" tells candidates exactly what they need and prevents late-stage drop-off when the licence mismatch surfaces.

3. Be specific about scope. "Dentist" is broad. Spell out whether you need a general dentist, a specialist (and which specialty), and the procedure mix you actually run - implants, aligners, endo, paediatric. Scope of practice is tied to what the licence allows, so matching the JD to the licence category avoids hiring someone who cannot legally do the work you need.

4. State the earning model, not just a number. Dentists compare fixed salary versus commission-on-collections carefully. A line such as "AED 15,000 base plus 30% of collections above target" attracts the right profile far better than "competitive package."

5. Confirm experience against the regulator's minimum. DHA requires two years post-qualification for general dentists; specialists need additional specialty experience. Asking for less than the regulator requires is pointless - the candidate cannot be licensed. Align your minimum with the licensing rule.

6. Mention CME and indemnity. Serious clinicians look for employers who support CME (40 hours/year for DHA renewal) and provide malpractice/indemnity cover. Listing these signals a well-run, compliant practice and is a genuine differentiator.

7. Be honest about commission and patient flow. If the package is commission-heavy, candidates will want to understand realistic chair occupancy and patient volume. Vague promises lead to early churn. Indicate the practice's patient base or marketing support so the earning potential is credible.

8. Make location and structure explicit. State the emirate, whether the clinic is mainland, free zone or in Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC, which has its own licensing pathway), and the working pattern. Clarity here prevents drop-off late in the process when logistics and licensing routes surface.

Once your JD is live, pair it with a structured interview. See our employer interview-questions guide for dentists to build a consistent, licence-aware screen, and our broader hiring guide for realistic time-to-hire planning in the GCC.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a Dentist job description include in the UAE?
A UAE dentist JD must lead with the health-authority licence requirement: whether you need an active DHA (Dubai), DOH (Abu Dhabi) or MOHAP (Northern Emirates) licence for your specific emirate, or whether you will consider eligibility-in-progress candidates. It should also state the DataFlow primary source verification and Prometric exam expectation, the recognised dental degree and minimum post-qualification experience, the scope of practice or specialty, the earning model (fixed vs commission), and the visa/work-authorisation position. Those specifics filter the unqualified at first read.
Does a dentist need a DHA, DOH or MOHAP licence to work in the UAE?
Yes - it is mandatory and emirate-specific. A dentist cannot legally treat patients in the UAE without an active licence from the regulator covering the emirate where the clinic operates: DHA for Dubai, DOH for Abu Dhabi, and MOHAP for Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah (Dubai Healthcare City has its own pathway). The licence is not transferable between emirates - a DHA-licensed dentist must obtain a DOH licence to practise in Abu Dhabi - so always name the regulator and emirate together in your job description.
What are the DataFlow and Prometric exam requirements for a UAE dentist?
Every UAE dentist licence requires DataFlow Group primary source verification (PSV), which confirms the degree, licence and experience directly with the issuing institutions (typically a few weeks). Applicants must also pass the relevant Prometric licensing exam - the DHA general-dentist exam comprises 150 MCQs in 170 minutes as of 2026, with a limited number of attempts shared across DHA, DOH and MOHAP. Some experienced specialists may be exempt from the exam depending on their category. Verify a candidate's DataFlow status and exam pass during screening rather than assuming the CV is sufficient.
What salary should I offer a dentist in the UAE?
A general dentist in the UAE typically earns around AED 12,000-25,000 per month, while experienced specialists and high-producing cosmetic or implant dentists can reach AED 30,000-50,000+ per month, often on commission or base-plus-percentage-of-collections models in busy private clinics. State the earning model explicitly - dentists weigh fixed versus commission structures heavily - and calibrate to your patient volume, specialty mix and location. A visible structure is the strongest filter you can add to a dental posting.
Can I write one dentist JD for the whole GCC?
Use one template as a base but localise the licensing line per country. The UAE splits across DHA, DOH and MOHAP; Saudi Arabia licenses dentists through SCFHS (with the Mumaris+ portal); Qatar through QCHP; Bahrain through NHRA; and Oman through OMSB/MOH. All require DataFlow PSV, but each authority needs its own separate DataFlow case - a UAE report cannot be reused for Saudi or Qatar. Keep the role purpose and clinical responsibilities portable, then adapt the regulator, exam and visa wording for each country before posting.
