What Makes a Strong Business Development Manager Job Description in the UAE
A business-development role is a revenue role, and the job description should read like one. The most common mistake in UAE BDM ads is hiding the commercial expectation - the revenue target, the on-target earnings (OTE) and the vertical - behind soft language like "drive growth" and "build relationships." Genuine closers read those ads and scroll past, while unqualified applicants flood the inbox. A strong BDM JD does the opposite: it names the revenue number, the base-plus-commission structure, the specific market or product, and the practical UAE requirements (a valid driving licence for field roles, Arabic where it genuinely matters). Stating the OTE band and the target up front is the cheapest, highest-impact filter you can apply to a role that otherwise attracts enormous, low-quality volume.
Be explicit about the motion you actually reward. "Business development manager" is used loosely - new-logo hunting, account farming, partnership/channel development and pre-sales are different jobs that attract different candidates and command different pay. Name the motion. Decide too whether this is a pure individual contributor or a player-coach with a small team, because that changes the calibre and band of applicants. And keep the regulatory edges honest: a generic BDM needs no licence, but if the role touches real estate it requires a RERA / Dubai Land Department broker card, so include that clause only when it applies. Common Mistakes to Avoid in a BDM Job Description
Beyond hiding the number, a few recurring errors quietly sink UAE business-development ads. The first is conflating "business development manager" with "sales manager" or "account manager" without saying which behaviour you reward - new-logo hunting, existing-account farming and channel development are different jobs, so name the motion explicitly. The second is omitting the vertical: "business development manager" with no sector draws applicants from unrelated industries whose networks are worthless to you, whereas "B2B logistics business development manager for the GCC e-commerce sector" pre-qualifies the pool. The third is an unrealistic requirements list - demanding ten years' experience, fluent Arabic, a specific ERP, a degree and an aggressive target on a mid-level base simply produces no qualified applicants; trim must-haves to the genuine deal-breakers (driving licence, sector track record, a portable network, evidenced target attainment) and mark the rest as advantageous. The fourth is an unbelievable OTE - quoting an aspirational ceiling rather than a realistic on-target figure deters strong candidates or causes early churn when reality bites. Finally, do not bury the compliance reassurance: a single clear line that the employer sponsors the visa and pays all government fees materially lifts response rates from strong expatriate candidates who have been burned by employers trying to pass costs on.
Tips for Customising This Template
- Lead with the revenue number. Replace "[AED amount or % growth]" with a real target - it filters more effectively than any other line.
- Name the motion. State whether this is new-logo hunting, partnership development or account growth, so you attract the right behaviour.
- Make OTE believable. Quote a realistic on-target figure, not a ceiling - inflated OTE causes early churn in commission roles.
- Keep the driving-licence line, drop the RERA line unless real estate. The UAE driving licence is a near-universal field requirement; the broker card applies only to real-estate roles.
- State Arabic honestly. If it is genuinely needed for the account base, say "required"; otherwise "strong advantage" so you do not lose strong English-only closers.
- Separate IC from player-coach scope. Decide whether this person only sells or also leads, and write the responsibilities to match - it changes the calibre and pay of applicants.
- Keep the visa clause. Confirming employer-paid sponsorship reassures expatriate candidates and signals compliance.
