How to Use This Accountant Job Description Template

A good accountant job description does two jobs at once: it sells the role to qualified finance professionals, and it filters out the large volume of unqualified applications that GCC finance postings attract. The single biggest mistake employers make is writing a generic, copy-paste "Accountant wanted" advert that omits the salary band, the must-have qualification and the work-authorisation expectation. Vague posts pull hundreds of applications and almost no signal. The template below is structured to fix that. Copy it, replace the bracketed fields with your own details, delete the lines that don't apply, and you have a job description that is ready to post on MenaJobs and other regional boards.

Every section is written for the UAE market specifically, where the accountant role has shifted heavily towards tax compliance. Since federal corporate tax took effect for financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023, and with 5% VAT in force since 2018, employers increasingly screen for hands-on UAE VAT filing and corporate-tax literacy rather than bookkeeping alone. The template builds those expectations in.

Role purpose

We are a [industry] company based in [city / free zone / mainland], looking for a detail-oriented Accountant to own day-to-day bookkeeping, monthly and year-end closes, reconciliations, and UAE VAT and corporate-tax compliance. Reporting to the [Finance Manager / Financial Controller], you will keep our books accurate, audit-ready and compliant with UAE Federal Tax Authority (FTA) rules.

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain the general ledger and post accurate, well-supported journal entries.
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable, including supplier and customer reconciliations.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts and assist with the annual statutory audit.
  • Perform bank, intercompany and balance-sheet reconciliations and resolve variances.
  • Own the month-end and year-end close to deadline.
  • Prepare and file periodic UAE VAT returns through the FTA's EmaraTax portal (most businesses file quarterly; very large turnover files monthly).
  • Support UAE corporate-tax computations and the annual return (9% on taxable income above AED 375,000), and maintain supporting documentation.
  • Process WPS-compliant payroll and staff expense reimbursements, ensuring salaries are paid through the Wage Protection System on time.
  • Maintain fixed-asset registers, accruals, prepayments and provisions.
  • Ensure records comply with IFRS and the company's accounting policies.
  • Liaise with external auditors, tax consultants and the bank.

Requirements (must-have)

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
  • Part- or fully-qualified ACCA, CPA, CMA or CA / ICAEW (state your minimum clearly).
  • [3]+ years' accounting experience, ideally including UAE or wider GCC experience.
  • Hands-on UAE VAT experience: preparing and filing returns, handling input/output VAT, reverse charge and FTA correspondence.
  • Working knowledge of UAE corporate tax obligations and FTA registration/filing requirements.
  • Strong IFRS knowledge and solid month-end close experience.

Nice-to-have

  • Experience in [your sector, e.g. trading, real estate, professional services, logistics].
  • Arabic language skills (useful for government and local-family-business dealings).
  • Exposure to e-invoicing / digital tax reporting as the UAE rolls out its framework.

Salary band and benefits

Salary: AED [X]-[Y] per month, commensurate with experience. As a guide, junior/assistant accountants typically earn around AED 5,000-8,000, mid-level accountants AED 9,000-16,000, and senior accountants AED 15,000-25,000+ per month, with SMEs at the lower end and banks, large corporates and Big 4 firms at the upper end. Stating the band is the single most effective filter you can add. Benefits: housing and transport allowances (commonly 25-40% of base), mandatory health insurance, annual or biennial home-country air ticket, employer-sponsored residence visa, and end-of-service gratuity in line with UAE Labour Law.

Work authorisation and visa wording

This role is based in [emirate]. We sponsor a [mainland MOHRE / free-zone] residence visa and work permit; under UAE law the employer pays all visa and permit costs. Candidates with a transferable UAE residence visa can usually start sooner. Note the standard notice period in the UAE is 30-90 days, so factor your availability into your application.

Emiratisation note (use where relevant)

If your company has 20 or more employees, an accountant is a skilled role that counts towards your MOHRE Emiratisation obligations. You can still hire an expatriate accountant, and most are, but where you intend to fill this position with a UAE national to support your Nafis quota, say so: e.g. "This role is open to UAE nationals as part of our Emiratisation commitment." Keep any such statement truthful, because MOHRE actively penalises fictitious Emiratisation.

Tips for Writing an Accountant JD That Converts

1. Lead with the three filters. Salary band, must-have qualification (ACCA/CPA/CMA/CA, part- or fully-qualified) and visa expectation belong near the top. This trio cuts unqualified applications dramatically and is the highest-leverage edit you can make.

2. Be specific about tax. "Accounting experience" is generic. "Files quarterly UAE VAT returns via EmaraTax and supports corporate-tax computations" tells a real accountant exactly what the job involves and screens for the skill that commands a premium in today's market.

3. Name your actual software. An accountant who has lived in SAP is different from one who has only used Tally or Zoho. Listing the real ERP filters for fit and signals you know your own stack.

4. Don't over-title or under-title. If you need someone to close the books independently and sign off VAT, that is a mid-to-senior accountant, not a junior. Match the title, the responsibilities and the salary band to each other or you will attract the wrong shortlist.

5. State the qualification level, not just the body. "ACCA" alone is ambiguous. "ACCA part-qualified (minimum F-level papers complete)" or "fully qualified ACCA/CPA" sets a clear bar and avoids time-wasting screening calls.

6. Keep claims honest and verifiable. The UAE has no single state-issued accountant licence that an in-house accountant must hold, unlike Saudi Arabia where SOCPA registration is effectively mandatory. So screen on the professional qualification and verify it against the issuing body, rather than asking for a non-existent "UAE accounting licence."

7. Scale the responsibilities to the seniority. A junior accountant should be framed around AP/AR, bank reconciliations, data entry and supporting the close - supervised work. A mid-level accountant owns the close, prepares VAT returns and produces management accounts with limited oversight. A senior accountant leads the close, signs off VAT and corporate-tax submissions, manages the audit relationship and may supervise juniors. Listing senior-level duties under a junior salary band is the fastest way to either repel good candidates or attract people who will leave the moment a better-paid match appears. Decide which of the three profiles you are hiring, then prune the responsibilities and requirements list so it matches that single profile rather than describing three jobs at once.

8. Make the location and structure explicit. State whether the role is mainland or free zone, in-office, hybrid or remote, and which emirate. Free-zone sponsorship is cheaper but restricts where the accountant can work, so candidates weighing offers want to know up front. A line such as "Dubai mainland, in-office, Sun-Thu" removes ambiguity and prevents drop-off late in the process when logistics surface.
