Why Teaching Is a Great Entry-Level Career in the GCC
The Gulf is one of the most active teacher-hiring regions on earth. Dubai alone licenses more than 220 private schools through the KHDA, Abu Dhabi’s ADEK oversees another 200+, Saudi Arabia’s Education and Training Evaluation Commission (ETEC) regulates over 1,200 private and international schools, and Qatar’s MoEHE has authorised more than 175 international schools across Doha and Education City. Each new academic year, GEMS Education recruits over 1,200 teachers across 60+ schools, Taaleem and Aldar each hire 300–500, and Saudi Vision 2030 has triggered the largest K–12 expansion programme in the region’s history.
For a fresh graduate this is one of the most predictable, well-paid entry routes in the Gulf: tax-free salary, school holidays, housing or housing allowance, annual flight, full medical, end-of-service gratuity, and frequently tuition discounts for the teacher’s own children. International curricula (IB, British, American, MoE, CBSE/ICSE) dominate the private market, which means qualified graduates from the UK, US, Canada, Australia, India, the Philippines, South Africa, and Egypt all have viable applications. Saudi nationals, Emiratis, Qataris, Bahrainis, and Omanis are recruited preferentially under nationalisation quotas (Saudisation, Emiratisation Education Track, Qatarisation, Bahrainisation, Omanisation), particularly into government and semi-government school networks.
Educational Pathway to Teacher in the GCC
The minimum requirement at KHDA, ADEK, MOE UAE, and ETEC-licensed schools is a bachelor’s degree in your teaching subject (or a related discipline) plus a recognised teaching qualification: PGCE, B.Ed, QTS, GTC Scotland registration, US state licensure, Australian AITSL accreditation, or a Diploma in Education. KHDA additionally requires two years of post-qualification classroom experience at most schools (waived at GEMS Cadre and ADEK’s ECT track for fresh graduates from a small list of approved programmes).
Mandatory licensing layers:
- UAE: KHDA Teacher Permit (Dubai), ADEK Teacher License (Abu Dhabi) under the UAE Teacher Licensing System, or MoE UAE Teacher Licence (northern emirates) — all require subject + pedagogy Pearson VUE exams
- Saudi Arabia: ETEC Teacher Licensing exam, plus Mowaamah and Tatweer recognition for international schools
- Qatar: MoEHE Teacher Authorisation
- Bahrain: Bahrain Education and Training Quality Authority (BQA) recognition
- Kuwait and Oman: Ministry of Education recognition, plus subject-specific endorsement
Genuinely accelerating credentials beyond your teaching qualification:
- IB workshop certificates (Category 1) for PYP, MYP, DP — baseline at IB World Schools
- Cambridge International Education endorsement for IGCSE / A-Level / Checkpoint
- Apple Distinguished Educator, Google Certified Educator Level 1/2, Microsoft Innovative Educator — ed-tech filters
- CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL — differentiator for EAL classrooms
- Specialist SEND / Inclusion qualifications (PG Cert SpLD, ASD) — high demand under KHDA Dubai Inclusive Education Policy and ADEK’s Inclusion Strategy

Building Your First Teacher Resume
- Lead with the curriculum. “UK National Curriculum, EYFS, Key Stages 1–4, IGCSE Edexcel/Cambridge, IB MYP/DP” tells HR exactly where you fit.
- Quantify outcomes. “Lifted Year 6 SATs combined attainment from 68% to 81% over two years” beats “raised attainment.”
- Name the ed-tech. ManageBac, iSAMS, SchoolBase, PowerSchool, Toddle, SeeSaw, Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams for Education, Kahoot, Nearpod — all keyword-scanned by school ATS filters.
- Licensing and attestation up top. “QTS holder, GTC Scotland registered, KHDA Teacher Permit secured, degree attested for UAE use” signals immediate deployability.
- Show inspection awareness. Mentioning KHDA DSIB descriptors (Good / Very Good / Outstanding), ADEK Irtiqaa, or Ofsted criteria signals you can speak the language of the next inspection cycle.
30-60-90 Day Plan for Your First Role
Days 1–30: Learn the School and the Standards
Read the school’s last KHDA DSIB report or ADEK Irtiqaa report cover-to-cover, plus the assessment policy, behaviour policy, and inclusion (SEND) policy. Get logged into iSAMS, ManageBac, PowerSchool, Toddle, or SeeSaw in week one. Memorise your class data: prior attainment, EAL flags, SEND register, and target grades. Introduce yourself to your head of year, head of department, SENDCo, and the inspection coordinator — these four relationships drive your year.
Days 31–60: Own Your Data and a Co-Curricular
By half-term, you should be tracking student progress weekly in your subject. Lead at least one co-curricular activity (debate, robotics, drama, model UN, sports squad) — this is the visibility currency in GCC schools. Volunteer for the next learning-walk cycle; teachers who can host an inspection-ready lesson at short notice are remembered when leadership opportunities open.
Days 61–90: Build Department and Parent Visibility
By month three, deliver at least one outstanding-rated observation, run one well-attended parent consultation, and submit one inquiry-based unit plan to your head of department. Send your line manager a short three-wins, one-risk, one-ask email. Begin preparing for the next inspection self-evaluation evidence file and book your IB Cat 2 / Cambridge endorsement / PG Cert SpLD course.
