This role is focused on shaping enterprise-grade API management capabilities for complex integration landscapes. As an API Connect Designer / Architect, you will help define the architecture, standards, and governance practices that support scalable, secure, and reliable API ecosystems, while partnering closely with architecture, engineering, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and DevOps stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Design and architect enterprise API management solutions using IBM API Connect.
- Define scalable, secure, and highly available API platform architectures.
- Design and govern the full API lifecycle, including design, development, deployment, versioning, monitoring, and retirement.
- Establish enterprise API standards, design guidelines, naming conventions, and reusable patterns.
- Design and implement API security policies, including authentication, authorization, rate limiting, throttling, and access controls.
- Configure and govern API Gateway policies and security mechanisms.
- Design API integrations with internal applications, external systems, and third-party services.
- Define API architecture patterns aligned with enterprise integration and technology standards.
- Establish API governance frameworks, standards, policies, and best practices.
- Review API designs and ensure compliance with architecture and governance standards.
- Partner with enterprise and solution architects to align API solutions with broader enterprise architecture.
- Collaborate with application development, integration, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and DevOps teams.
- Analyze business and technical requirements and translate them into scalable API and integration architectures.
- Design API security using standards such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, and related protocols.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 10–12 years of experience in API management and integration architecture, including work in large enterprise integration environments.
- Hands-on experience with IBM API Connect, including designing enterprise API management solutions and configuring API Gateway policies.
- Strong background designing REST APIs, working with SOAP web services, and supporting microservices integration.
- Experience connecting APIs with databases, applications, middleware, and external systems across enterprise backend integrations.
- Experience modernizing integration landscapes, including exposing legacy services through modern APIs.
- Solid understanding of HTTP/HTTPS, JSON, and XML.
- Hands-on experience implementing API security controls, including authentication, authorization, rate limiting, throttling, routing, and related security policies.
- Experience designing secure API architectures using OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, TLS/SSL, and mTLS.
- Experience integrating API platforms with enterprise IAM solutions or identity providers.
- Background in Banking or FinTech environments, with experience designing API security architectures and controls to protect against common API threats.
- Hands-on experience with enterprise API governance frameworks, including API design standards, naming conventions, documentation, versioning, and reusable API patterns.
- Experience governing the API lifecycle from design and approval through deployment, monitoring, versioning, and retirement.
- Experience conducting formal API architecture and design reviews and working through cross-functional API approval and governance processes.
