Qiddiya Investment Company invites applications for the position of Director of Design - Structural Steelwork for the MBS Stadium project. This is an exceptional opportunity to play a leading role in one of the most technically complex and ambitious stadium developments in the world, a 46,979-seat landmark perched 200 metres above the Tuwaiq cliffs, designed to become the world's first fully integrated venue combining a retractable roof, movable pitch, and LED wall, and a designated venue for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
Reporting to the Structural Design Lead, the successful candidate will provide expert guidance to the Management Contractor and specialist steel contractor on all aspects of the design and construction of the structural steelwork. The stadium's location on a cliff edge, its three-sided bowl configuration, and its integration of world-record moving structures create a structural steelwork challenge of extraordinary complexity, spanning scale, logistical constraints, fabrication engineering, and construction methodology. This role requires a natural problem-solver who can navigate these challenges with confidence, collaborate across multiple contracting parties, and drive solutions that keep the project on programme.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical guidance and design oversight to the Management Contractor and specialist steel contractor across all structural steelwork activities on the MBS Stadium project.
- Lead the identification, assessment, and resolution of complex structural steelwork design and construction challenges arising from the project's unique scale, cliff-edge location, and engineering requirements.
- Review and comment on steelwork design submissions, fabrication drawings, and construction methodology statements, ensuring alignment with project specifications and quality standards.
- Liaise closely with the Management Contractor and steel subcontractor to monitor design development and resolve technical issues promptly.
- Coordinate with wider design, engineering, and project management teams to ensure steelwork design is fully integrated with architectural, facade, and MEP requirements.
- Support the review of RFIs, technical queries, and design change requests relating to structural steelwork.
- Provide regular technical reporting to the Structural Design Lead on design progress, outstanding issues, and risk items.
- Contribute to a collaborative, solutions-focused team culture in line with the ambition and pace of the project.Requirements
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Structural or Civil Engineering; a Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional accreditation is strongly preferred.
- Minimum 10+ years of experience in structural steelwork, spanning design, fabrication, and construction — ideally across major stadia, arenas, or landmark infrastructure projects.
- Deep technical knowledge of structural steelwork design principles, fabrication processes, and construction sequencing.
- Proven experience working alongside Management Contractors and specialist steelwork subcontractors on complex, fast-paced projects.
- Strong problem-solving ability with a track record of resolving engineering challenges on projects of significant scale and complexity.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage effectively across design, contracting, and client teams.
- A positive, proactive attitude and the resilience to thrive in a high-pressure, high-ambition project environment.
